You found a story!
Hunted in Hudson Valley by The Reluctant Monkey. Scary Tale. Rated PG. WC: 1883 Lucy Radcliffe's Halloween adventure brings her to a very familiar part of New York to investigate a case of corporate espionage. |
You slowly lean out from behind your hiding place. The figure is still there, but now his attention seems to be on a large tree just off the trail. He bends down and though you are peering as intently as possible, thanks to the faint light, you are unable to make out what he is doing. When he stands again, he's no longer holding his satchel. He looks around for a moment, then turns and hurries away, vanishing from sight before you can even decide your next move.
You step back onto the path and approach the tree. You suspect you know what you'll discover and are not surprised to see a dark opening.
This is it. Deep in this strange, misty forest, you've found it. The hollow. It's not a land feature after all. It's a hollow tree. Of course! What better place for a bank robber to quickly stash stolen loot? You inhale sharply. Decades have passed since your grandfather committed his crime. Even if you truly did just witness a ghostly reenactment of one of his final deeds before he disappeared somewhere in the marshes, there's no saying the money is still here. Someone could have found it years ago and never reported it. And some particularly unfriendly creature or critter could have since moved in, making its home in this available shelter.
Your phone is dead. You have no light to guide you. If you are going to investigate this hollow tree, it will have to be done by feel rather than sight.

You've made it this far. You might as well see this thing all the way through.
Or...
No. You are not about to stick your hand and arm into a hollow tree in the dead of night, not knowing what might be inside. You may be crazy and you may have spent Halloween chasing ghosts around the Wheeler Game Preserve, but you aren't that crazy. You'll come back in the daytime and see if anything is there.
