Prologue
October 23, 1991
Trixie Belden was annoyed. Recess was almost over and they’d spent the majority of it sitting on the monkey bars, talking about boys. She glared at Diana Lynch as her friend flipped back a long lock of dark hair and continued her story about Tad Webster leaving her a note in her desk. Why the heck should they care about that? Tad was a goon.
She twisted around and dropped to the ground. Someone had left one of the jump ropes by the slide and she snatched it up.
“The sun will set.
The moon will rise.
The Rocket Man comes,
And someone dies.
He can't be stopped.
He can't be beat.
Halloween night,
All trick, no treat.”
“Beatrix Belden!”
Startled, Trixie stumbled and nearly fell. She dropped the rope and turned to see Mrs. Patterson glaring down at her. “Ye- yes, ma’am?” she stuttered.
“I believe you are aware of school policy regarding the Rocket Man, young lady. You may march yourself down to Mr. Cane’s office immediately.”
Trixie frowned. “I wasn’t trying to scare anybody,” she said in protest. “It’s just some stupid chant-“
Mrs. Patterson’s expression hardened and Trixie knew she’d landed herself in even hotter water. “Go. Now,” her teacher hissed through pursed lips.
Trixie rushed off. Whatever Mr. Cane decided was a suitable punishment for her transgression, at that moment she felt sure it would be preferable to anything further Mrs. Patterson might say. She fervently hoped Moms would be understanding when she learned her only daughter had been sent to the principal’s office. Again.
